Papier Machie is the most characteristic Kashmiri craft. The basic papier
machie article is made in a mould, then painted and polished in successive
layers until the final intricate design is produced. Designs in the shape of
flowers and birds, and the heart shaped Kashmir chinar leaf add life to the
objects. Bright and ethnic colors like peacock blue, dark green, brown etc.
are used. Gold and silver are used on larger articles. Figures and objects
like the Kashmiri houseboat are depicted. Items of paper machie include
bowls, cups, containers, jewelry boxes. Letter holders, tables, lamps,
coasters, trays and others.
Situated in the midst of high mountains and
steep hills, Jammu and Kashmir comprises of three regions: the foothill
plains of Jammu; the lakes and blue valleys of Kashmir, the high altitude
plains and the beautiful mountains of Ladakh. Pashmina, carpets and papier
mache products are its major handicrafts. The climate is one of opposites:
while it is endearingly hot for those in the foothills, the people of Ladakh
and Kashmir wait for the snow to melt on the high passes. Jammu becomes much
more pleasant from October onwards. The best time to enjoy Kashmir is during
May to September. Kashmir has the maximum population at 53%, Jammu has 45%,
while Ladakh is rather sparsely inhabited, due to geographical constraints.
The native inhabitants or Kashmiris as they are called, are known for their
simple and spartan lifestyle. Their simplicity is in sharp contrast with the
richness of their crafts. Exotic pashmina shawls made in Kashmir are
priceless treasures the world over. The beautiful carpets woven by
Kashmiris, the breathtaking beauty of their walnut wood carved furniture and
artifacts are a sight to behold.
