AYURVEDA
Introduction:
Ayurveda (meaning: the science of life is a medical system practiced in India. The earliest references are found in Charaksamhita. It was written thousands of years ago. Ayurveda was the first medical system to include a science of toxicology. In fact it is more than a medical system. One of Ayurveda's main strengths is herbal therapy. We all are part of nature just as any other living being on the planet. All the animals & plants live in adherence to the laws of nature. We too must adhere to the same principles of nature and learn to create balance & good health within ourselves. In essence, Ayurveda has been in existence since the beginning of time & we have always been governed by the nature of law.

Understanding Ayurveda:
The word Ayurveda is made of two Sanskrit words. The ‘Ayu’ & ‘Veda’. Ayu means the life and Veda means knowledge of. Thus Ayurveda is the knowledge of life. According to Charaka, Ayu is the combination of Mind, body, senses & soul.

Our body is more than what is physically visible to us. We know that the mind not only provides us the capability to think but also helps us to coordinate the day to day activities such as the blood circulation, respiration, digestion & elimination etc. To be able to perform these functions our mind must be able to gather information from the senses. For example, smell and taste are two important senses that aid in digestive process.

Ayurveda, also sees before we exist in the physical form we exist in more subtle form known as soul. Soul is an energetic essence that preludes the physical entity. According to Indian mythology, we may occupy many physical bodies through out the course of time but our soul remains the same. This means when an individual nears the death many of his desires will cease to be present. The reason, soul no longer identifies with the body. In fact many individuals have been documented to have the sensation of being out of the body.:yurveda gives us a model to look up at each individual as a combination of three doshas (Vata, Pita, Kapha). When any of the dosha becomes accumulated, ayurveda will suggest specific lifestyle & nutritional guidelines to assist the individual in reducing the dosha that has become excessive. The understanding that we all are unique individuals enables ayurveda to address not only specific health concerns but also offers explanation as to why different people respond differently to specific health concerns. Under expert guidance certain herbal supplements may also be suggested to hasten the healing process.
